“L’art est le mode d’expression le plus puissant qui soit pour matérialiser la pensée humaine. Il renvoie depuis toujours à un monde idéalisé. Il nous précipite dans des sensations inconnues, appartenant pour beaucoup à l’inconscient de l’artiste. Il parle à chacun de nous différemment.”

El “Realismo mágico” es intrínseco al pensamiento Latinoamericano. Crecí en Caracas inmerso en el Trópico Mágico que me dio a conocer la luz y los colores como nunca antes los he visto.

The Artist
Born in Caracas, Oscar Carvallo is an artist, a creative mind, and the artistic director of his own couture brand based in Paris for 24 years. After attaining a degree in law and a masters in design at the Domus Academy in Milan, he moved to Paris where he opened his own Maison Couture, he has collaborated with numerous artists who inspired some of his collections. Along with Carlos Cruz Diez, he created the collection «Voyage Cinétique I and II ” .
His passion for painting began in childhood and he joined the drawing school at the Louvre Museum. He then studied "Fayoum" the ancient technique at the Paris Pictor Art School where he learned the "encaustique" for two years. His paintings are a reflexion of his childhood, exploring the Latino American concept of " Realismo mágico" which was originated in south America during the 1940s by, among others, Arturo Uslar Pietri inspired by the book of the german art critic Franz Roh written in 1925, who created the concept.
The Technique & “ Realismo mágico”
This ancient technique from the Greco Roman times - called Fayoum during the first century in Egypt – are a type of naturalistic painted portraits on wooden boards attached to upper class mommies. This technique was used by Greek artists to create portraits of the Pharaohs. Now called “Encaustique" or wax painting, it was used since the antique times, it is a technique which uses the colors in powder mixed with beeswax, usually done on wood, but what makes these portraits last forever is the rabbit skin varnish to protect the paintings over time.
The art work of Oscar Carvallo is a mixture of his experience in the Couture world and the history of an ancient civilization, and it has been inspired by all his collections with interesting themes like,“ La femme Poisson”, “Eagle eye”, “Voyage Cinétique” and many others. The transformation of a couture dress in couture painting brings the spirit of the past to the contemporary expression of art.
Carvallo opened his own art atelier in Paris where he develops his unique paintings and also works within a textile concept - the «Tapestry”. The imaginary portraits are transformed into huge tapestries, giving his paintings an extraordinary and contemporary twist.
“Art is the most powerful mode of expression there is to materialize human thoughts. It has always referred to an idealized world. He rushes us into unknown sensations, many of which belong to the artist's unconscious. It speaks to each of us differently.”
“Creation is evolution, art is a simple expression of a creative mind.”
